The morning had barely broken when Eli stepped outside.
The sky was grey, not yet bright, and the world felt heavyโlike it hadnโt quite decided whether to rise or fall. He stood there for a moment, listening. In the distance, voices carried on the wind. Not kind voices. Not gentle ones. They had been there for days nowโwhispers, accusations, lies spoken just loud enough to be heard.
He closed his eyes.
โLordโฆ hear me.โ
The words didnโt come polished or perfect. They came tired. They came worn. But they came.
Eli had tried to fix things himself. He had tried to answer back, to defend his name, to prove his heart. But every word only seemed to make things worse. The more he spoke, the deeper he sank. And now, standing in that quiet morning, he realised somethingโhe had been looking at the wrong place.
Slowly, he lifted his eyes.
Not to the hills. Not to the houses. Not to the people who had turned against him. But higher.
โTo Youโฆ I look up.โ
There was a stillness in that moment, like heaven itself had paused to listen.
He remembered what he had once been taughtโthat God was not like man. God did not twist words. God did not delight in wrong. God did not stand with lies. And somehow, that truth began to settle his heart. Because if God was truly like thatโholy, pure, unchangingโthen God saw everything clearly. Nothing had been missed. Nothing had been overlooked.
Eli let out a slow breath.
โI donโt belong here,โ he whispered, thinking of the bitterness around him, the deceit in every conversation, the weight of it all. โButโฆ I can come to You.โ
Not because he had done everything right. Not because he was strong. But because God was merciful.
And so, quietly, he bowed his head.
โLead me.โ
That was all he asked.
Not for revenge. Not for justice in his own hands. Justโฆ โLead me.โ Because for the first time, he understoodโif God did not guide him, he would lose his way completely. The voices around him were too loud, too convincing. They sounded right at times. They almost made sense. But deep down, he knew they were empty.
โMake Your way straight before me.โ
The wind shifted, and for a moment, the noise in the distance seemed to fade. Not disappearโbut lose its power.
Something was changing.
Not around himโฆ but within him.
He no longer felt the need to answer every voice. He no longer felt the pressure to fight every battle. There was a quiet strength rising in himโa confidence not in himself, but in God.
โIf You are for me,โ he murmured, โthen I will trust You.โ
And that wordโtrustโsettled deep.
Trust when the voices speak.
Trust when the path is unclear.
Trust when the heart feels weak.
Trust when nothing makes sense.
He lifted his head, and though the morning was still dim, there was light beginning to break through.
A small smile touched his face.
โThey can say what they will,โ he said softly. โBut I am safe with You.โ
And in that moment, he knew something he hadnโt known beforeโnot just in his mind, but in his soul.
God was not distant.
God was not unaware.
God was not late.
God was his shield.
Not somewhere far offโbut surrounding him, covering him, holding him steady when everything else tried to pull him down.
Eli took a step forward.
Then another.
The voices were still there. The world had not changed overnight. But he had.
Because now, he was not walking alone.
And as he walked, a quiet joy began to riseโunexpected, unexplainable, but real.
Not because the battle was overโฆ
โฆbut because he had learned where to place his trust.
And that made all the difference.
