Beauty for Ashes
God’s Beauty Parlour
“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” — Isaiah 61:3 (KJV)
What a wonderful promise from God: beauty for ashes.
Ashes remind us of something that has been burned. When a fire has finished its work, what remains? Ashes. What once had shape, usefulness, beauty, and perhaps great value has been reduced to dust and cinders.
Sometimes life can feel exactly like that.
There are times when our hopes seem to have burned away. Dreams disappear. Friends may forsake us. Health can fail. Families can suffer. Churches can disappoint us. Even our strength to carry on can seem to disappear.
We look at what remains and say, “Lord, all I have left are ashes.”
But Isaiah 61:3 tells us that God can do something with ashes.
Dust and Ashes
Abraham said:
“Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes.” — Genesis 18:27
Job knew what ashes were. After terrible suffering, loss, sickness, and sorrow, he said:
“Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” — Job 42:6
David also knew what it was to experience such sorrow that even his food seemed like ashes:
“For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping.” — Psalm 102:9
These were great men of God, yet they experienced times of deep sorrow.
Being a child of God does not mean that we shall never suffer. It means that we do not suffer alone.
When Life Loses Its Taste
When enjoyment disappears from life, everything can seem tasteless. When hope has been crushed, tomorrow can look dark.
Job lost his possessions, his children, his health, and the understanding of those around him. There were moments when even God seemed far away.
That is exactly when the enemy would like to whisper:
There is no hope.
There is no point going on.
God has forgotten you.
Do not believe him.
Jesus said of the devil:
“He is a liar, and the father of it.” — John 8:44
Your circumstances may have changed, but God has not changed.
Your strength may have failed, but God’s strength has not failed.
Your friends may have left you, but Jesus Christ has not forsaken you.
The Lord has promised:
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” — Hebrews 13:5
And Jesus said:
“Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” — Matthew 28:20
Bring God Your Ashes
Perhaps today you feel spiritually burned out.
Perhaps you feel empty.
Perhaps something precious in your life has been destroyed, and when you look at what remains, all you can see are ashes.
Bring those ashes to Jesus.
You may think, What could God possibly do with this?
Give it to Him and see.
God does not ask you to manufacture beauty out of your ashes. He asks you to bring the ashes to Him.
Jesus Christ is our great High Priest. Come before Him with a humble and broken heart.
The Psalmist declared:
“A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” — Psalm 51:17
You may come with empty hands.
You may come with tears in your eyes.
You may come without knowing what tomorrow holds.
But come to Jesus.
God’s Beauty Parlour
I like to think of Isaiah 61:3 as God’s Beauty Parlour.
You bring Him your ashes—
He gives you beauty.
You bring Him your mourning—
He gives you the oil of joy.
You bring Him your heaviness—
He gives you the garment of praise.
What an exchange!
Only God can turn a curse into a blessing.
Only God can turn midnight into morning.
Only God can take something that appears completely ruined and make something beautiful from it.
Remember: your mourning can become morning.
There may be tears tonight, but the Psalmist reminds us:
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” — Psalm 30:5
Burned Out — But Not Finished
There is a story told of an elderly man of God who lay seriously ill. He overheard his servant speaking with the doctor.
He called his servant and asked, “What did the doctor say?”
The servant reluctantly replied, “He says you may have only about an hour to live.”
The old servant of God answered in effect, “Then let me spend that hour on my knees praying for the Church.”
What a way to finish!
Burned out in the service of God, yet still praying.
Still believing.
Still serving.
Still looking toward Heaven.
The world may look at ashes and see only what has been destroyed.
God looks at ashes and sees what He can restore.
Give Him the Ashes
I do not know what you have been through.
I do not know what burden you may be carrying today.
Perhaps nobody else understands the suffering hidden inside your heart.
But Jesus knows.
Take the ashes of your life to Him.
Ask Him to replace despair with hope, sorrow with joy, heaviness with praise, and darkness with His glorious light.
And remember this:
The fire may have left the ashes, but God has not finished the story.
When you have nothing beautiful left to offer Him, give Him the ashes.
For our God is still the God who gives—
Beauty for ashes,
Joy for mourning,
Praise for heaviness,
Morning after the night,
And hope when all hope seems gone.
God never turns His back upon the soul that genuinely comes before Him.
Beauty for Ashes
“To give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.”— Isaiah 61:3 (KJV)
Bring Him your ashes—and let God make something beautiful.
