Isaiah 31:5 (KJV) says:
“As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.”
This verse gives a beautiful picture of God watching over His people, like a bird hovering over its nest to protect its young. The Lord sees the danger, stays close, and has the power to defend them.
At this time, Judah faced the threat of Assyria. Instead of trusting God, its leaders were looking to Egypt’s horses, chariots, and military strength for protection. Through Isaiah, God called them to return to Him and trust His power.
The verse describes His care in three ways:
- “Defend Jerusalem” — God would stand guard over the city.
- “Deliver it” — He would rescue it from the threatening enemy.
- “Preserve it” — He would keep it safe through His protecting presence.
The words “passing over” recall the protection God gave His people at the Passover in Egypt. Here, too, He promises to spare and protect His people.
The lesson for us: We can seek practical help, but our deepest confidence should rest in God. This promise concerned Jerusalem in a particular crisis; it does not mean believers will never suffer. It reminds us that God is powerful, attentive, and faithful, even when danger surrounds us.
Like a bird guarding its young, God’s care is close and personal. We are never beyond His sight.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to trust You when trouble comes. Keep me from placing my confidence in human strength alone. Teach me to rest in Your presence and follow Your ways. Amen.
