GOD REMEMBERS
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” — Zechariah 4:6
The name Zechariah means “Yahweh remembers” or “The LORD remembers.”
What a wonderful truth that is! God remembers His people. He remembers His promises. He remembers our suffering, our faithfulness, our prayers, and even those times when others have treated us unjustly.
The people of Israel had experienced judgment because they had turned away from God. They had fallen into idolatry and rebellion, and the LORD allowed them to experience captivity. Yet even in their chastisement, God had not forgotten them.
God also saw how cruelly His people had been treated.
The nations may have thought Israel was forgotten, defeated and finished—but God was still watching.
The LORD declared concerning His people:
“For he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.” — Zechariah 2:8
What a powerful picture!
God’s people are precious to Him. Although He disciplines His children, that does not mean He stops loving them. A loving father may correct his child, but he does not stop caring for that child.
My mother used to say something similar:
“I can say what I like about my children, but let nobody else say it!”
There is something in that simple saying that reminds me of God’s relationship with His children. God may correct us, chastise us and bring us back into the right way, but we still belong to Him.
GOD REMEMBERS HIS PROMISES
The returning Israelites faced an enormous task. Jerusalem had been devastated, and the Temple needed to be rebuilt. Humanly speaking, the work must have appeared overwhelming.
But God gave Zechariah a message:
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” — Zechariah 4:6
That message is just as important today.
There are circumstances we cannot change by our own strength. There are mountains we cannot move through human ability. There are battles that intelligence, money, influence and determination alone cannot win.
But God says:
“By my Spirit.”
When our strength runs out, God’s strength has not.
When we cannot see a way forward, God can still make a way.
When circumstances tell us that something is impossible, God reminds us that His promises have not changed.
WE ARE THE TEMPLE OF GOD
In Zechariah’s day, God’s people were rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, believers are reminded that God also dwells within His people by His Spirit.
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” — 1 Corinthians 3:16
That should affect how we live.
Our bodies, our minds, our words and our actions belong to the Lord. Christianity is not merely attending a church building. Christ is our Head, and believers are members of His body.
Therefore, we should seek to live lives that honour the One who has redeemed us.
GOD’S PROMISES ARE FOR THE STORM
Sometimes we think God’s promises mean that Christians should never experience trouble.
But God’s promises were never given so that we could live inside a comfortable bubble.
They were given to sustain us through the trial.
There will be valleys.
There will be storms.
There will be disappointments.
There may be times when we cannot understand why God has allowed something to happen.
But the God who made the promise will not forget the promise.
The old hymn reminds us that some go through the waters, some through the floods and some through great trials—but God’s redeemed people are brought safely through by the blood of Christ.
Perhaps today you are passing through your own trial.
Maybe somebody has wronged you.
Maybe you have been praying for a long time and have not yet seen the answer.
Maybe circumstances seem to be saying, “God has forgotten you.”
Remember Zechariah.
Yahweh remembers.
God has not forgotten where you are.
God has not forgotten what you have suffered.
God has not forgotten your prayers.
God has not forgotten His Word.
God has not forgotten His promises.
And when others have wronged us, we do not need to live consumed by revenge. Scripture reminds us that vengeance belongs to the Lord. We can place the matter into His hands and trust Him to judge righteously.
Many years ago, when I was going through pain, the Lord impressed a simple thought upon my heart, and I have never forgotten it:
“DON’T COMPLAIN — CLAIM THE PROMISES OF GOD.”
When the mountain is high—claim His promises.
When the night is dark—claim His promises.
When your strength is gone—claim His promises.
When others fail you—claim His promises.
When you cannot see tomorrow—claim His promises.
For the God who remembered Israel still remembers His children today.
God remembers. God remains faithful. God keeps His Word.
