Salvation Is Found in Jesus Christ Alone
The followers of Jesus were first called Christians at Antioch (Acts 11:26). The name described people who belonged to Christ, believed His Word and followed His teachings. Today, however, almost anyone may call themselves a Christian, regardless of what they actually believe or how they live.
Even at Christmas, the name of Christ is sometimes replaced by “Xmas.” Although the “X” originally came from the Greek letter Chi, the first letter of Christos, we must be careful that Christ Himself is never removed from Christmas. Without Jesus Christ, there is no true meaning to the celebration.
The earliest Christians did not begin with grand church buildings. They gathered in homes, shared fellowship, prayed and studied the Scriptures together. They were followers of Jesus who believed the Gospel and sought to obey God.
Throughout history, many Bible-believing Christians were called heretics because their beliefs went against the religious authorities of their time. Some were imprisoned, tortured or burned at the stake. Yet it is important to remember that Jesus never commanded His followers to spread the faith through violence or persecution. His people are called to proclaim the truth in love.
Jesus did not die merely to establish another human religion. He came to bring salvation to the world:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…”
—John 3:16
Mary was greatly blessed and chosen by God to give birth to Jesus. Yet she humbly called herself “the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). She was God’s faithful servant, but salvation and worship belong to God alone.
Jesus asked:
“Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?”
—Matthew 12:48
He then explained that whoever does the will of His Father belongs to His spiritual family.
No denomination, religious institution or human priest can purchase salvation for us. Forgiveness comes through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, who is our one true Mediator. The Bible declares:
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
—Acts 4:12
God’s family should be known as a people of truth, love, mercy and peace. Despite the persecution Christians have suffered throughout the centuries, the grace of Jesus enables His followers to forgive those who have mistreated them.
True Christianity is not merely a religious label. It is a new life received through faith in Jesus Christ—loving Him, obeying His Word and extending His forgiveness to others.
