His Name Was Amos—Mine Is George

Did your parents ever send you on an errand or ask you to deliver a message? I remember my uncle sending me to the bookmakers to place a bet for him. After I gave my life to Jesus Christ, however, he had to send someone else.

The Bible tells us about a man named Amos. He already had two occupations: he was a shepherd and cared for sycamore-fig trees. Then God gave him another responsibility—He called Amos to be His prophet and to deliver His message.

The words God spoke through Amos were not well received, especially by the religious leaders. Amaziah the priest complained to the king that Amos was conspiring against him and that the land could not bear his words (Amos 7:10). Amos had pronounced judgment upon the surrounding nations, but now it was Israel’s turn.

Although the Israelites were God’s chosen people, they had turned away from Him. They still used His name, attended worship and presented their offerings, but their hearts were far from God. We might say that they lived like saints on Sunday and like the devil on Monday. The Bible warns:

“The hypocrite’s hope shall perish.”
—Job 8:13

Greed was another serious problem. The rich took advantage of the poor, while some priests and prophets cared more about wealth than righteousness. Gold had become more important to them than God.

Surely no one today would claim to serve God merely for money—or could they?

God’s Message of Judgment

The Bible teaches that every one of us will give an account of ourselves to God. Both the small and the great will stand before Him, and the books will be opened. Anyone whose name is not found written in the Book of Life will face God’s judgment (Revelation 20:12–15).

To put it plainly: if your name is not written in the Book of Life, you are not prepared for Heaven.

You may ask, “Why would a loving God allow anyone to face such judgment?” God is loving, but He is also holy and cannot overlook sin. He gave us His Ten Commandments in Exodus 20, yet all of us have broken His law and sinned against Him.

Under the Old Covenant, an unblemished lamb was sacrificed, and its blood was offered as an atonement for sin. The Bible tells us:

“Without shedding of blood is no remission.”
—Hebrews 9:22

These sacrifices pointed forward to Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son. Jesus became the perfect and final sacrifice when He shed His blood and died upon the cross at Calvary. He rose again, conquering sin and death, and God now commands everyone everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30).

If you repent of your sins and place your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, He will forgive you, save you and make you part of God’s family. This is what it means to be born again and made ready for Heaven—not through our own goodness, but through God’s grace.

I began by telling you about a man with a message. Amos had a message from God for the people of his day, and I, George, have a message for you today:

“Repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
—Mark 1:15

God is giving you an opportunity to turn from your sin and receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. This is the Good News of the Gospel:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
—John 3:16

To believe in Christ means more than simply believing that He exists. It means depending upon Him, trusting Him and committing your life to the One who gave His life for you.
