Ruth Chapter 2: Grace in the Field of Boaz

Ruth chapter 2 is a beautiful story of faithfulness, kindness and God’s guiding hand. Although Ruth could not yet see what God was doing, the Lord was quietly leading her towards a wonderful new beginning.

Ruth Goes to Work

Naomi and Ruth had returned to Bethlehem with very little. Ruth was a Moabite widow living in a foreign land, but she refused to sit down and give up. She said to Naomi:

“Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace.”
— Ruth 2:2

In those days, God’s law commanded landowners not to gather every last piece of grain. Some had to be left behind so that poor people, widows and strangers could collect food.

Ruth was willing to work humbly and honestly to provide for herself and Naomi. She did not know where to go, but she trusted that someone would show her kindness.

God Leads Ruth to the Right Field

The Bible tells us that Ruth “happened” to enter a field belonging to a wealthy and respected man named Boaz. However, this was much more than a coincidence—it was the providence of God.

Boaz was a relative of Naomi’s late husband, Elimelech. Ruth did not yet understand the importance of this connection, but God was already preparing the way for her future.

Sometimes we may think we have arrived somewhere by chance, but the Lord may be guiding our footsteps without us realising it.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.”
— Psalm 37:23

Boaz Notices Ruth

When Boaz arrived at his field, he greeted his workers by saying:

“The Lord be with you.”

His workers replied:

“The Lord bless thee.”

This shows that Boaz was a man who honoured God and treated his workers with respect.

Boaz soon noticed Ruth and asked who she was. His servant told him about everything Ruth had done for Naomi. Boaz had heard how Ruth had left her homeland, her family and her former way of life to remain with Naomi and trust in the God of Israel.

Boaz said to her:

“The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.”
— Ruth 2:12

Ruth had sought shelter beneath the wings of God, and the Lord was now using Boaz to protect and provide for her.

Grace Beyond What Ruth Expected

Boaz told Ruth to remain in his fields, stay close to his female workers and drink from the water provided for his servants. He warned the young men not to trouble her.

Ruth fell before Boaz and asked why she had found such favour when she was a foreigner. Ruth knew that she had done nothing to deserve such kindness. Boaz was showing her grace.

At mealtime, Boaz invited Ruth to eat with his workers. He gave her roasted grain until she was satisfied, and she even had some left over to take home to Naomi.

Boaz then secretly commanded his workers to pull out extra handfuls of grain and leave them where Ruth could gather them. Ruth entered the field hoping to collect only the leftovers, but Boaz gave her far more than she expected.

That is a wonderful picture of God’s grace. The Lord does not merely give us the scraps of His mercy. Through Jesus Christ, He welcomes us, protects us and provides more grace than we could ever deserve.

Naomi’s Hope Is Restored

Ruth worked until evening and returned home carrying a generous amount of barley. She also gave Naomi the food she had saved from her meal.

When Naomi saw how much Ruth had gathered, she asked where she had been working. Ruth told her that the owner of the field was named Boaz.

Naomi immediately recognised the hand of God and said:

“Blessed be he of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead.”
— Ruth 2:20

Naomi explained that Boaz was one of their close relatives and therefore could act as a “kinsman-redeemer.” Such a man could protect the family, recover what had been lost and help preserve the family name.

Naomi, who had returned to Bethlehem feeling empty and bitter, was beginning to see that God had not forgotten her.

What Ruth Chapter 2 Teaches Us

Ruth chapter 2 reminds us that God is working even when we cannot see Him.

Ruth demonstrated faith through her actions. She was humble, hardworking, loyal and willing to begin again. Boaz demonstrated godly character by protecting the vulnerable, treating his workers properly and showing kindness to a stranger.

Boaz also provides us with a picture of Jesus Christ, our great Redeemer. Like Ruth, we were outsiders with nothing to offer. Yet Christ noticed us, welcomed us, covered us with His protection and paid the price to redeem us.

When Ruth entered the field that morning, she was simply searching for enough food to survive. She returned home carrying evidence that God had already gone before her.

Child of God, you may not understand where the Lord is leading you today. Keep trusting Him, remain faithful and continue doing what is right. The field that appears ordinary may become the very place where God reveals His extraordinary grace.

“For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”
— Psalm 5:12
