Create in Me a Clean Heart

It was the psalmist David who cried out: (Psalm 51:10)

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

One thing David realised was that there was nothing he could do to make himself right with God. It was as though he had used up all his favours with the Almighty. He had no option left but to cast himself completely upon the mercy of God.

I say this because David had committed adultery with Bathsheba, another man’s wife. The one thing he was forbidden to take was the very thing he desired, regardless of the cost. His sin did not end there. When he discovered that Bathsheba was carrying his child, he tried to cover his sin by sending her husband, Uriah, to the fiercest part of the battle so that he would be killed.

But nothing escapes the eyes of the Almighty.

God sent the prophet Nathan to rebuke David for the death of Uriah and for his sin before the Lord. David was forgiven, but his actions still carried painful consequences, including the death of the child. Sin has a price to pay, even in the life of God’s children. As the old saying goes, “It does not pay to disobey.”

I was once told of a father whose son constantly lived on the wild side of life. His behaviour grieved his father so deeply that it brought him to despair and even affected his health. Eventually, the father decided he would disown his son.

As he prayed, he told the Lord of his decision.

Then God spoke to him:

“Show mercy.”

With a heavy sigh, the father replied,

“Lord, he doesn’t deserve mercy.”

The Lord answered,

“Neither do you.”

Those few words changed everything.

At great personal cost, the father continued to help his son. He encouraged him, stood by him, and eventually saw him return to work and build a decent life after many disappointments.

Many of God’s people do not deserve mercy.

The truth is, none of us do.

Yet God knows we desperately need it.

How thankful we should be that He does not deal with us according to what we deserve, but according to His great love and compassion.

May we never forget the words of our Lord Jesus Christ:

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” (Matthew 5:7)

The mercy we have freely received is the mercy we are called to freely give.
