A Father’s warning

Book of Proverbs chapter 5 is a father’s urgent warning to his son about the dangers of sexual immorality and the importance of faithfulness in marriage. While it specifically speaks of an “adulterous woman,” the broader principle applies to anyone tempted to unfaithfulness or destructive relationships.

Verses 1–6: The deceptive nature of temptation

The father urges his son to pay attention to wisdom because temptation often looks attractive at first.

• The forbidden woman speaks with flattering words.
• She seems sweet “like honey.”
• But in the end, she brings bitterness, pain, and death.

Lesson: Sin often promises pleasure but hides its consequences.

Verses 7–14: Avoid the path entirely

The father doesn’t say, “Be careful.” He says, stay far away.

• Don’t go near her house.
• Otherwise, you’ll lose your honor, wealth, health, and peace.
• Many regret their choices only after suffering the consequences.

Lesson: The safest way to resist temptation is to avoid situations that feed it.

Verses 15–20: Celebrate marital faithfulness

The imagery of drinking water from your own cistern means:

• Find joy and satisfaction with your own spouse.
• Marriage is God’s design for intimacy.
• Be captivated by your spouse rather than seeking pleasure elsewhere.

Lesson: God’s command isn’t just “don’t commit adultery”; it’s also “delight in faithful love.”

Verses 21–23: God sees everything

The chapter ends by reminding us:

• God sees every path we take.
• Sin eventually traps the sinner.
• A lack of discipline leads to ruin.

Lesson: Our choices have spiritual and practical consequences, and nothing is hidden from God.

Just as adultery breaks a marriage covenant, idolatry and persistent sin break our fellowship with God. The chapter calls believers to remain devoted to both their spouse (if married) and to God.
