Proverbs 19

Proverbs 19

Proverbs 19 teaches us how to live wisely, speak truthfully, work diligently and treat others with compassion. It contrasts Godโ€™s wisdom with human foolishness.

Key lessons include:

  • Integrity is worth more than wealth. It is better to be poor and honest than dishonest and foolish (verse 1).
  • Think before acting. Enthusiasm without knowledge can lead us down the wrong path (verse 2).
  • Accept responsibility. People sometimes ruin their own lives through foolish choices and then blame God (verse 3).
  • Show compassion to the poor. Kindness to someone in need is like lending to the Lord, and He will reward it (verse 17).
  • Control your temper. A hot-tempered person repeatedly suffers the consequences of uncontrolled anger (verse 19).
  • Listen to wise counsel. Receiving instruction today helps us become wiser in the future (verse 20).
  • God has the final word. We may make many plans, but the Lordโ€™s purpose will ultimately prevail (verse 21).
  • Discipline children with love. Proper correction gives them hope and helps protect them from destructive choices (verse 18).
  • Fear the Lord. Reverence for God brings security, contentment and spiritual life (verse 23).

The central message of Proverbs 19 is: live honestly, listen to correction, care for people in need and trust God above your own plans.

โ€œThere are many devices in a manโ€™s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.โ€
