The Marks of a Godly Life

Text: Proverbs 11

Introduction

Proverbs 11 is a chapter of contrasts. It compares the righteous with the wicked, honesty with deceit, humility with pride, generosity with selfishness, and wisdom with foolishness. Solomon reminds us that every choice we make has consequences, both now and in eternity.

The question we should ask ourselves is this:

“What marks my life?”

Does my life reflect the wisdom of God, or the wisdom of this world?

1. A Godly Life Is Marked by Honesty

Proverbs 11:1
“A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.”

God delights in honesty.

In Solomon’s day merchants could cheat customers by using dishonest weights. Today the principle applies to every area of life.

• Honest in business.
• Honest in our words.
• Honest in our relationships.
• Honest before God.

You may fool people, but you will never fool God.

The Christian should be known as someone whose word can be trusted.

Application: Ask yourself, “Am I living with integrity even when nobody is watching?”

2. A Godly Life Is Marked by Humility

Proverbs 11:2
“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.”

Pride was Satan’s downfall.

Pride keeps people from repentance.

Pride says,
“I know best.”

Humility says,
“Lord, teach me.”

God gives grace to the humble.

The higher we lift ourselves, the further we fall.

The lower we bow before God, the more He lifts us up.

3. A Godly Life Is Marked by Righteousness

Proverbs 11:4
“Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.”

Money cannot buy salvation.

It cannot buy forgiveness.

It cannot buy peace with God.

Only the righteousness that comes through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can save a sinner.

Our greatest treasure is not found in the bank but in Christ.

4. A Godly Life Is Marked by Wise Speech

Proverbs 11:9
“An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.”

Words are powerful.

A careless word can wound a heart.

A kind word can encourage a weary soul.

A Gospel word can lead someone to Christ.

Before speaking, ask:

• Is it true?
• Is it kind?
• Is it necessary?
• Will it honour Christ?

May our mouths become instruments of blessing.

5. A Godly Life Is Marked by Wise Counsel

Proverbs 11:14
“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”

No one knows everything.

Wise believers seek godly advice.

The safest path is often found by listening to mature Christians who know the Scriptures.

Never make major decisions without prayer and biblical counsel.

6. A Godly Life Is Marked by Generosity

Proverbs 11:24-25

“There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth… The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”

God blesses generous people.

Generosity is not only about money.

We can be generous with:

• Our time.
• Our encouragement.
• Our love.
• Our prayers.
• Our forgiveness.

The more we become like Christ, the more generous we become.

Jesus gave everything so we could have eternal life.

7. A Godly Life Bears Fruit

Proverbs 11:30

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”

A healthy tree produces fruit.

A healthy Christian also produces fruit.

The fruit of the Spirit includes:

• Love
• Joy
• Peace
• Patience
• Kindness
• Goodness
• Faithfulness
• Gentleness
• Self-control

God also calls us to point others to Christ.

Soul-winning begins with living a Christlike life and faithfully sharing the Gospel whenever the opportunity comes.

Conclusion

Proverbs 11 reminds us that God is not impressed by wealth, position, or popularity.

He looks at the heart.

He delights in people who are:

• Honest.
• Humble.
• Righteous.
• Wise in speech.
• Willing to receive counsel.
• Generous.
• Fruitful for His kingdom.

The greatest example of these qualities is the Lord Jesus Christ. He lived a perfect life of truth, humility, compassion, and righteousness, and then gave Himself on the cross so that sinners could be saved.

Final Challenge

Ask yourself today:

• Am I walking in integrity?
• Is pride hindering my relationship with God?
• Are my words building others up?
• Am I generous with what God has given me?
• Is my life bearing fruit for Christ?

May we leave determined to live wisely, honour the Lord in every area of life, and shine as lights in a world that desperately needs the wisdom of God.
