Sermon: Wisdom for Everyday Life

Text: Proverbs 19

Proverbs 19 teaches us that true wisdom is not merely knowing what is right—it is choosing to live God’s way every day. This chapter speaks about honesty, patience, discipline, generosity and our need to trust the Lord.

1. Character is worth more than wealth

“Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.” —Proverbs 19:1

The world often measures people by their possessions, position and success. God measures us by our character. A person may have little money yet be rich in honesty, faith and love. Another may possess great wealth but remain spiritually poor.

It is better to lose money while keeping your integrity than to gain the world through dishonesty. Everything we possess will eventually pass away, but the character formed within us matters eternally.

2. Zeal must be guided by knowledge

“The soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.” —Proverbs 19:2

Sincerity alone is not enough. We may feel strongly about something and still be mistaken. Many poor decisions are made because people act quickly without praying, seeking wisdom or considering the consequences.

Before taking an important step, pause and ask: “Is this God’s will, or am I simply following my feelings?” Faith is not reckless. It listens to God and walks carefully.

3. Do not blame God for our own choices

“The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord.” —Proverbs 19:3

Sometimes people reject God’s wisdom, make their own choices and then blame Him when things go wrong. Yet God patiently warns us through Scripture, conscience and wise counsel.

Instead of accusing God, we should examine our hearts, confess our mistakes and return to His path. God is merciful. When we truly repent, He can restore us and teach us through our failures.

4. A truthful witness matters to God

“A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.” —Proverbs 19:5

God takes truth seriously. Lies can destroy reputations, divide families and condemn innocent people. We must therefore be careful not only about what we say but also about what we repeat.

Before sharing a story, ask whether it is true, necessary and fair. Christians should be known as people whose words can be trusted. Jesus is the truth, so His followers must not become comfortable with dishonesty.

5. Patience is a mark of wisdom

“The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.” —Proverbs 19:11

Anyone can react in anger, but wisdom knows when to remain silent. This verse does not tell us to excuse abuse or ignore serious wrongdoing. It teaches us not to become controlled by every insult or offence.

We do not have to answer every criticism or win every argument. Sometimes the strongest response is to forgive, pray and move forward. Patience protects us from words and actions we may later regret.

6. Discipline your children with love

“Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.” —Proverbs 19:18

Children need love, instruction and appropriate boundaries. Discipline should never arise from rage or cruelty. Its purpose is correction, protection and the development of godly character.

Parents must teach by example as well as by words. Children notice how adults speak, forgive, worship and treat others. Loving discipline points them towards responsibility and wisdom.

7. Kindness to the poor is service to God

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” —Proverbs 19:17

God identifies Himself with people in need. When we feed the hungry, comfort the lonely or help someone struggling, heaven takes notice. We should not give simply to receive something back; we give because God has been generous to us.

Even when we cannot do everything, we can do something. A meal, a visit, an encouraging word or practical help may become an answer to someone’s prayer.

8. God’s purpose will stand

“There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.” —Proverbs 19:21

We all make plans, but we do not control tomorrow. Doors may close, circumstances may change and our preferred path may disappear. Nevertheless, God remains sovereign.

This does not mean we should stop planning. It means we should hold our plans humbly before the Lord and say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” What God purposes cannot be defeated.

9. The fear of the Lord brings life

“The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied.” —Proverbs 19:23

To fear the Lord means to honour Him, trust Him and take His Word seriously. It is not the terror of a slave before a cruel master; it is reverence for our holy and loving Creator.

The world promises satisfaction through wealth, pleasure and recognition, yet these things cannot fill the soul. Lasting contentment is found in knowing God through Jesus Christ.

Conclusion

Proverbs 19 calls us to choose integrity over riches, truth over lies, patience over anger and God’s purpose over our own pride. It teaches us to care for those in need, guide our families wisely and live in reverence before the Lord.

But none of us has followed this wisdom perfectly. We have spoken foolishly, acted hastily and wandered from God’s way. That is why we need Jesus Christ. He died for our sins and rose again so that all who trust Him may be forgiven and receive new life.

Let us ask ourselves:

• Is there dishonesty that I need to confess?
• Is there someone whom I need to forgive?
• Am I making plans without seeking God?
• Is there someone in need whom I could help?
• Have I trusted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour?

May God give us wisdom not only to hear His Word but also to obey it.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, give us the wisdom to live with honesty, patience and compassion. Guard our mouths from falsehood, our hearts from bitterness and our feet from hasty decisions. Help us care for those in need and submit our plans to You. Forgive us through Jesus Christ and guide us in the way of everlasting life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
